El cantante tejano ganador del Grammy Emilio Navaira podrÃa no sobrevivir una lesión cerebral grave que sufrió cuando su autobús se estrelló cerca de Houston, dijo el lunes su médico neurocirujano.
“Existe la posibilidad de que no salga de esta”, advirtió el doctor Alex Valadka, director de servicio de neurotraumatologÃa del Memorial Hermann en el Centro Médico de Texas y vicepresidente de neurociencias del Centro de Ciencias de la Salud de la Universidad de Texas en Houston.
“Todos deben entender eso de entrada. Asà de mal está”, declaró.
Valadka y su equipo retiraron un coágulo sanguÃneo que ejercÃa presión en el cerebro de Navaira durante una operación de dos horas, luego que el cantante ingresó al hospital tras el accidente el domingo al amanecer.
El artista de 45 años y seis miembros de su banda y séquito sufrieron lesiones. Otro miembro del grupo permanecÃa hospitalizado el lunes, dijo Joe Casias, agente de Navaira desde 1989.
Valadka dijo que Navaira estaba en coma cuando llegó al hospital pero que la cirugÃa salió bien. También sufrió fracturas en la columna y hematomas tÃpicos de un accidente como el suyo, pero la lesión cerebral era la más seria, señaló.
Preguntado si las lesiones podrÃan poner fin a su carrera musical, Valadka dijo que primero hay que ver “si podrá acaso vivir”.
El médico indicó que era demasiado temprano para predecir la condición del cantante si éste llegara a recuperarse.
“Esto no es como lo que uno ve en la TV y en las pelÃculas donde la gente se da un golpe en la cabeza, se despierta y se va a casa al dÃa siguiente”, declaró. “En la vida real, toma mucho tiempo. Pero esperamos que cada dÃa haya un poco de progreso”.
Casias dijo que Navaira, un nativo de San Antonio al que describió “como un hermano”, conducÃa el autobús de gira, pero no detalló si llevaba puesto el cinturón de seguridad.
“Le encantaba manejar ese autobús”, dijo.
Añadió que cualquier interrogante sobre si el cantante habÃa consumido alcohol previo al accidente era investigada por la policÃa en Bellaire, el enclave de Houston donde ocurrió el choque en la carretera Interstatal 610. Navaira y su banda, RÃo, habÃan tocado en un club de Houston el sábado por la noche.
Estaban regresando al área de San Antonio, donde vivÃan, y tenÃan previsto ir a California a finales de esta semana para otras presentaciones.
Navaira y RÃo han lanzado más de una docena de discos, incluido “Acuérdate”, que ganó el Grammy al mejor álbum de música tejana. Navairo se benefició de la explosión del género musical que trajo Selena, quien fue asesinada en 1995.

–But if someone is frequently getting busted for hanging their pants too low . . . they can wind up in JAIL for up to 60 days (–they didn’t say how many times you have to get busted to become a “habitual offender”).
